WHY TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
There are hundreds of languages in the world and when you travel you come across people who can speak several languages. Have you always wanted this to be you? Did this create a little bit of envy in you, but you know that this is really an unfounded feeling. Do some of your work colleagues or friends speak several languages? It is a great feeling to be able to speak, at any level, in a number of languages. It can bring you closer to your friends, colleagues and business acquaintances, and this can involve just learning some common phrases or more, depending on your time availability and commitment.
NOT TOO MUCH WORK
Learning a language is definitely not too much work, if you make it a fun exercise; a hobby. If you approach language learning only to get course credits or because you have to, for some reason, then it will be extremely tedious and laborious. The learning process will definitely not be pleasurable, or even remotely enjoyable. There isn’t a need to have this attitude when there are so many different ways to learn languages that one of these must be compatible to your life style, life interests, and can fit into your already full schedule.
HOW TO MAKE IT FUN
Having fun while learning a language really comes down to having a positive attitude. If you approach the activity of language learning as a great way to pass time, to meet new friends, and to learn about people, you will find that hours pass.
Not only will hours pass as you delve into the world of the language, but you will also become relaxed needing to spend less money at the spa having massages, or whatever you do to relax.. The benefits of learning a language extend way beyond those immediately recognizable at the start of the learning process. Sit back, relax and enjoy the process and activities in involved in learning your favorite languages.
English is the most commonly spoken language in business. It is used throughout the world. If two persons meet of different nationalities, it is more than likely that they would choose English as their common language to communicate over and above any other language.
With the outsourcing of business services, the use of the English language has increased in use. The people of many countries in Asia, Africa, and South America are not only learning English, but are mastering the language. With this language ability is an increased access to job opportunities, and in particular positions paying a higher salary. Many students are studying English as their major in college and then studying a specialization after this initial study investment.
There are many jobs that require a high level of English proficiency as a minimum entry requirement. English is needed to just get an interview, but to be accepted into the job, a higher level of English is needed. This English ability is tested and training is highly recommended to pass the requirements. Afterwards of course you will receive technical training but not in English proficiency.
Sometimes it is poor listening skills that cause a person to be not great at speaking English, even after many years of study. The art of communication, in any language, requires a person to speak, another to receive the message, the message to be interpreted and comprehended, and the recipient to provide feedback. If you are having difficulty at being understood or passing English tests then look at all these elements in relation to your language speaking. You may find that your difficulties are due to listening skills rather than a comprehension of the language and grammar. If this is the cause, then targeted training focusing on listening to word enunciation may be of higher value to you and result in a turnaround in your ability as measured by tests.
An improvement in communication skills will result in you being able to better communicate in all languages that you know. You will find that your appreciation of your native language will improve. Your understanding and interpretation of messages will become clearer.
The only definitive method of measuring your English ability is through a process of testing. You may think that your English is of a certain standard but on testing be surprised that it is below the standard measures of competency. Knowing this result is a positive, as you now can work to make quantifiable improvements.
Your lead up to taking a test, and the approach you take during this period of time, will decide the result you are able to achieve in the formal test. A positive attitude is at least seventy percent of the requirements, as you may in theory know a language but get performance anxiety and blow the test completely.
Testing of the English language has several components, testing all aspects of your comprehension. The spoken English test is the most common and is structured to deliver questions at a lively pace leaving little time for contemplation or thinking through words that you don’t quite understand. The test usually uses tape recorders and is timed, but other technology is also used to record your answers. Knowing these facts, your preparation to the test, should take this into account. The simulation of a real test environment is the easiest approach to achieve better results.
Purchase past testing papers where possible, and practice, practice, practice. Of course the tests will change, but there are enough similarity in the patterns of questions asked that this approach will be of great benefit to your test preparation. It is important to feel confident prior to entering an exam environment.
If when you are in the midst of a spoken English test, you have a panic attack and think you are scoring poorly. Take a breath in through your mouth, and out through your nose and try to relax. Just try and concentrate on the section you are currently working through, and forget about what has passed. It is no longer important, as scoring well in one section can make up for a poor score in another section.
If, unfortunately you fail the test, then don’t despair. Sometimes you can sit the test again. In the meantime speak more English in your day to day activities.. This is the only way to improve your English, and it is also the easiest approach.
