There are many ways to learn foreign languages and the effectiveness of each method depends on what type of language learner you are and what works best for you. The following are just some tips to supplement your foreign language learning and can be applied almost anytime, anywhere.

  • Bring a pocket dictionary in your target language with you. This is very helpful in expanding your vocabulary in your target language and it helps you understand the new words you have just encountered.
  • Use flash cards with a foreign word on one side and its definition on the other side to help you add more words in your vocabulary.
  • Word association helps in memorizing new words in the target language that is why it is helpful to make connections and associate words playfully for easier assimilation into your memory.
  • Saying foreign languages out loud will allow you to become familiar with the sounds of your target language. Exaggerating foreign language sounds will allow you to remember more words and become more confident in speaking in your foreign language.
  • Imitating a native speaker of your target language will allow you to hone your speaking and listening skills. Learning how to talk like a native is a plus especially if you know a native speaker who can help you go about that. It is also essential to know colloquial and slang terms.
  • Using a phrase book for travelers can also be very helpful in forming phrases and sentences of your target language. Your phrasebook is essential whether you are traveling to the place where your target language is spoken or just enhancing and practicing your language skills.
  • Read children’s books published in your target language. Books for children are easier to understand and learn that’s why they are helpful especially for beginners.
  • Immerse yourself in foreign books, magazines, and newspapers. Print media are very informative and up to date with the latest goings-on in the world of your target language that is why it is advantageous to stack up on them.
  • Watching movies and TV shows in your target language will help you become more familiar with sounds and emotions used to speak certain words.
  • Listen to music and songs in your foreign language. Learning languages through music have been found effective by some language learners and it could also work for you since music is appealing and inspiring and may help you learn your target language in an interesting way.
  • Try to write letters in your target language even though you will not be sending them to anybody. Writing is a good drill to enhance your grammar and sentence construction skills.
  • As much as possible, use the language whenever you can in order to have it embedded in your system.
  • Thinking in your target language most of the time will allow you to embrace the language into your life and become more familiar it with more than ever. Thinking in your target language is an exercise that will ultimately become a habit and it will make you become comfortable and confident when the time comes that you will use the language in engaging conversations with speakers of the language.
  • Go on a trip to the place where your target language is spoken to become fully immersed in the language. The environment will inspire you to become better with the language and help you learn the language better and faster.
  • Practice makes perfect. Continually practicing your target language is one of the best things to do to make language learning effective.
